Puig Joins Boyhood Hero Seve As BMW Aussie PGA Champion

David Puig has joined boyhood hero the late, great Seve Ballesteros as winner of the BMW Australian PGA Championship.

Puig distanced himself from a three-way tie for the lead heading into the final round, winning by two shots after a flawless closing round of 66 for an 18-under tallly.

The win in the LIV golfers third pro career success and a first after two wins on the Asian Tour for the soon-to-be 24-year-old (December 7th).

China’s Wenyi Di matched Puig’s 66 to be second at 16-under and one clear of Aussie Marc Leischman who signed for 67 to share third on 15-under with Kiwi Nick Voke who also finished off with a 66.

Puig’s win comes 44-years after Ballesteros captured the title by three shots at Royal Melbourne and the win being the 32nd success among an ultra-amazing 90 Seve pro victories around the globe.

And Puig spoke of his joy in joining Seve as a winner of the Joe Kirkwood trophy.

I never saw him (Seve) play in person, which kind of sucks to be honest, but obviously you watch replays of every major he won and kind how he did and his little movie and show that there is, seen it at least three or four times”, said Puig.

“He’s such a big figure for Spanish golf and you see also Jon and pretty much every player but kind of close with John Rahm and the stories that he has and all he knows about what Seve accomplished too and everything.

“It’s just his presence and everything he accomplished. I guess it’s just part of Spanish players and in a way we try to be like Seve and play with that freedom. Kind of follow his short game a little bit and his attitude and behaviour and how much he cared and all that.

“So we all kind of try and look like a little bit like him and hopefully we’re kind on the right path”.

Fellow Spaniard Jose Lous Ballester shared 10th place and in his first event since brilliantly capturing the Asian Tour’s season-ending PIF Saudi International, and a win that continues to speak volumes of the strength of Spanish golf.

And this was a question asked of a proud Puig.

“Following in the footsteps of Spanish players is a dream come true”, he said.

“At the end of the day is what I look forward to, all these hours behind and all the hard work that golfers kind of puts and just to enjoy moments like this.

“There’s not so many unfortunately and when it happens it pays off for sure. Being able to watch Sergio and Jon and a few of the Spanish guys really closely and taking advice from them and also kind of doing my own thing that kind of works for me, right.

“It’s just really important and I’m glad and that I pulled it off and really, really happy with my performance this week for sure”,

Next up in the Crown Australian Open at the famed Royal Melbourne.
