McIlroy Declares ‘Massive Honour’ To Tour Miss Call For Grand Slam Champ To Be Knighted

Rory McIlroy has responded to TourMiss call earlier this week that the Grand Slam winning Northern Irishman will no doubt end his season being knighted by King Charles 111

Now after his opening round of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship McIlroy said it would be a ‘massive honour’ should the King bestow such honour upon him.

“If that were ever to happen, it would be an unbelievably massive honour,” he said following his round 66 to be just two shots from the lead on the Jumeirah Estates course in Dubai.

“That’s obviously up to people a lot more powerful and important than me. But I mean, if it were to happen one day, it would be a very proud moment in my life”.

There has only been three golfers to have been knighed and two of those British-born;

  • England’s Sir Henry Cotton (1988, Knight Bachelor, 1907–1987); Cotton had accepted the knighthood and it was made effective before his death. It was not appointed posthumously despite his death before his formal investiture. (Unlike certain other honours, knighthoods and damehoods cannot be appointed posthumously.)
  • New Zealand’s Sir Bob Charles (1999, KNZM, born 1936)
  • England’s Sir Nick Faldo (2009, Knight Bachelor, born 1957)

Given McIroy is the onlyBritish golfer to have won the famed Grand Slam it would seem a certainity that on the last day of this year McIlroy will shake hands with King Charles 111 and leave Buckingham Palace forever known as Sir Rory McIroy.

McIlroy heads to round three of the season-finale just two shots from the front as he seeks to retain the title with a fourth success while in the bigger 2025 DP World Tour season picture nearest rival and playing partner Marco Penge was clearly not at his physical best posting a bogey-riddled two-over 74 as he looks to deny McIlroy a seventh Race to Dubai No. 1 crown.
