Siem Soaring At The Belfry In Singing Praise New Callaway ‘Blades’

Ever popular Marcel Siem was proudly signing the prasie of his spanking new Callaway clubs after the 45-year-old German holed a series of lengthy putts as he carded an eagle and three birdies to lead after two rounds of the Belfred British Masters.

Siem added a second round three-under 69, capped by birdies at 15 and 16 and then a stunning eagle ‘3’ at the par-5 17th to his opening 66 to grab the clubhouse lead by a shot at nine-under from past US Open winning Matt Fitzpatrick on eight-under heading to the weekend rounds at famed The Belfry.

His fellow Englishman Matt Wallace was in a tie for third on seven under alongside New Zealand’s Kazuma Kobori and South African Brandon Stone.

Siem picked up his first birdie of the day from ten feet at the 12th hole before making back-to-back gains from over 20 feet at the 15th and 16th.

He then converted his stunning long-range eagle putt on the 17th to reach 11 under par.

But he could not keep the momentum going as he dropped three shots and picked up just one more birdie over the next ten holes.

And Siem felt he could have gone even lower, saying: “It was a great start. My ego took over a little on the back nine because I hit really good shots.

“On the 18th I got a bit unlucky with my drive, had a bad lie and missed the first short putt. Then on the first, I had two great shots. Misread that putt.

“On the second, I hit a great drive. I thought it was in the fairway. It bounced to the right apparently, pretty bad lie. Misread that putt for par as well. Next hole as well. Next hole as well.

“Then I finally hole one on the next, misread it again. Felt like I could have shot a bit lower today. So my ego took a bit over. That’s why you didn’t see me smiling.

“I will be smiling soon.”

Siem was then asked how impressed he was with his iron play and proudly remarked:  “I switched to a new Callaway blades in The Scottish Open, which are fantastic”, said the affable Siem. “They are so good. They are a bit more forgiving and I’m gaining more and more confidence with these irons. I really love them

“Body feels great. That helps to keep the momentum, keep the same rhythm over 18 holes. So I’m really pleased. Even out of the rough, they were really, really good. So I hope I can keep that up”

Siem has won six of his eight pro career victories on the DP World Tour with the last being success in last year’s Italian Open.

Fitzpatrick turned in 36 after carding one birdie and one bogey on the front nine before picking up shots at the 11th, 13th and 15th to move in the right direction.

After surrendering a bogey on the 16th, the home hope finished in style with a birdie at the last.

He said: “I felt like I played really solid. Ten fours in a row to start the day is always nice and steady, I guess.

“I wish there were a few more par fives there, but it was a good day all around. I felt like I never really put myself out of position and drove the ball really well off the tee. And I think if you can do that, you give yourself a chance.”
