It is now just a month away, or more precisely 29 days, till European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald will name his full 12-man 2025 European Ryder Cup team he’ll take with him to Bethpage Park Black for the 45th hosting of the Ryder Cup commencing on 24th September.
Unlike the ‘will he or won’t he’ scenario continuing to be staring at rival USA Captain Keegan Bradley, Donald has no such concern and in a pretty much straight forward move all the winning captain from 2023 needs to do is to name his six ‘wildcard’ picks that will join his six automatic qualifiers.
Europe’s top-six qualifiers off the 2025 European Team ranking will be confirmed on August 25th, the day following the British Masters on the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour’s Tour Championship and with Rory McIlroy continuing the lead the way as he has done since qualifying got under way.
If there is any real uncertanity facing Donald then it has to be whether or not he rewards Sergio Garcia with an 11th European Team cap.
As it currently stands the leading six are listed hereunder also were each members of Donald’s Rome winning team.
The current next four top-ranked, and with the exception of Rasmus Hojgaard, were also part of the victorious Rome side.
Of the 12 Europeans who competed two years ago in Rome only Spanaird Jon Rahm, currently ranked 21st on the standings, and Nicolai Hojgaard and presently lying 22nd, are outside of the top-10.
While the LIV Golf attached Rahm is going to require a ‘wildcard’ pick if he is to represent Europe for a fourth occasion, Nicolai Hojgaard’s form has not been great with a best finish since capturing last year’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship being runner-up in last month’s Scottish Open.
If Donald is looking for form players to take with him to Bethpage Park Black then you would have to think maybe of the England duo of Matt Wallace (11th on the rankings) and past US Open winning Matt Fitzpatrick (12th on the rankings) must come into the ‘wildcard’ selection frame.
Though given it will be some of the toughest sports fans on the planet who will venture to Bethpage Park to support their Stars-and-Stripes players, then you are going to need some real European ‘hard nuts’ to cope with that home advantage. Maybe it could be for this reason Donald may very well go with Garcia.
Looking also down the rankings table, and all the way down to 137th place is Garcia and a 10-time European Team member and six as a member of a winning team.
Anyway all will be revealed on Sepember 1st.
