South Korean golfer Byeong-hun An now is really coughing after the shock of being suspended for three months by the PGA Tour on Wednesday for violating its anti-doping policy with a cough medicine available over the counter in his homeland.
The 32-year-old from Seoul was issued a ban retroactive to 31 August, meaning An will be able to return to competition on 1st December, 2023.
The Tour indicated An was banned for an illegal substance that is on the World Ant-Doping list and that was contained in the cough medication.
“He has cooperated fully with the tour throughout the process and accepted his suspension,” the Tour said in a statement.
An will miss autumn events that are mainly targeted at players trying to earn their tour status for next season, something An has already done.
He is believed to be the eighth player suspended since the PGA Tour began drug testing in 2008, and the first since Matt Every in 2019.
An finished 44th in the FedEx Cup this year, so he is qualified for all of the US$20 million signature events in 2024. The suspension is retroactive to Aug. 31, meaning he will be eligible to return on Dec. 1.
He has not played since the BMW Championship in August. The FedEx Cup fall swing is primarily for players trying to secure their PGA Tour cards for next season.
An, who at 17 became the youngest U.S. Amateur champion in 2009 at Southern Hills, has yet to win on the PGA Tour. He won the European tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, in 2015. He played in the Presidents Cup in 2019 in Australia.
An, and currently ranked World No. 53, played in 31 events during the 2022-23 season and matched the best PGA finish of his career by sharing second last August at the Wyndham Championship. He also shared third last July at the Genesis Scottish Open.
He secured his biggest victory in 2015 at the DP World Tour’s flagship BMW Championship outside of London.
Six years earlier in 2009, a then aged 17 years An became the youngest winner of the US Amateur.
