Torrey Pines, California ….
Justin Rose has dedicated a maiden Farmers Insurance Open victory to his long-time caddy, Mark ‘Fooch’ Fulchar.
Rose, 38 captured the 24th victory of his pro career posting a final round 69 to win by two shots with a 21-under par tally on the South Course at Torrey Pines.
The win also has seen Rose become the winningest Englishman in the modern era history of the PGA Tour after he and Nick Faldo were tied on nine wins apiece, and with Faldo last winning on Tour in capturing the 1997 Nissan Open/
Fooch is recovering at his English residence after undergoing heart surgery and with Rose currently using the Monte-Carlo based Englishman, Gareth ‘Lordie’ Lord as caddy, and the former long-time caddy to Sweden’s Henrik Stenson.
“I’m dedicate this win to Fooch. That was the moment walking down the last hole and the TV cameras came over and where I was like, “Fooch, this one’s for you.” I forget the words, but it was directed at Fooch,” said Rose.
It prompted Rose to be asked whether ‘Fooch’, who has caddied for Rose in capturing a U.S. Open, an Olympic Golf Medal and also at last year’s Ryder Cup, to name just a few events the duo have been together, will be on a bonus though he’s recovering on the longue from his surgery.
“Fooch will be looked after, I’m sure. Fooch is my man, you know what I mean? He’ll be back,” said Rose smiling
“He should be out for anything from six weeks to three months really. I’ll expect him to be back for the Masters and anything before that would be a bonus.”
Rose had explained earlier in the week at Torrey Pines that Fulcher’s recovery following mitral valve replacement remains on a good course.
“He’s doing well,” Rose said. “He’s in his own room now up there, which is great. He’s got to stay in the hospital for another week or so just to continue to be checked out, but he’s making progress.”
