McIlroy Soaring With Not One But Two Eagles In Seven Holes Day Two Farmers

Torrey Pines, California ….

Rory McIlroy was soaring with not one but two completely different eagles within a seven-hole run at the start of his second round before eventually producing a ‘back-in-contention’ 65 at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

McIlroy, and teeing off from the ‘easier’ North Course, found the green with his second shot at the par-5 10th hole and then brilliantly holed a 15-footer for an eagle ‘3’.

Then at the uphill and stunning par-4 16th, and where there is the stunning backdrop of La Jolla Beach, McIlroy split the fairway with a booming drive and then with a wedge in his hand, he found the bottom of the cup with his second shot for an eagle ‘2’.

McIlroy showed his delight by throwing both arms skywards.

And as you looked skyward yet another a pair of deafening F-18 fighter jets flew over the course having taken-off from the nearby US Naval Air Station at Mirrimar, and the where much of the 1986 movie ‘Top Gun’ was filmed.

It was a first occasion McIlroy had posted two eagles in the same round since he eagled both the 16th and the 18th holes in a third round 68 and on route to victory in the 2014 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

The last occasion managed at least one eagle in his round was an 18th ‘3’ on day three of last September’s BMW Championship in suburban Philadelphia.

“It was a great and especially after only shooting one-under yesterday on the South Course, so I knew I needed to go out there today and shoot something in the mid-60s to just make the cut let alone get myself back into the golf tournament,” he said.

“So, it was nice to eagle the first hole I played, and something that I don’t think I’ve done in a very long time and was a real bonus holing that 80-yard wedge shot on the 16th or my seventh hole.

“To be five-under through nine holes and then standing on the first tee of the course and the 10th of my round I was then thinking of maybe shooting something similar like Jon Rahm shot yesterday (62) but all-in-all it was a good round of golf.”

McIlroy had commenced his round sharing 74th place at one-under par and in making the turn, and just after a birdie at his eighth hole, he was just inside the top-10.

He then headed into the homeward half picking-up a second birdie of his round at the par-four second hole but then dropped a first shot of the day at the par-4 sixth or the 16th of McIlroy’s round.

McIlroy dropped an only shot of his round at the eighth or his 17th and then after leaking a drive well right down his last hole, the par-5 ninth, he sent his second to just short of the green from where he chipped to some 10-feet shy of the flag and holed what was a fourth birdie putt.

The effort handed McIlroy a 36-hole eight-under par tally and then sharing ninth place in the $US 7.4m event.

McIlroy’s second day effort, and in his first Farmers showing, was clearly a lot brighter than Thursday’s no frills event debut on the tougher South Course.

The current World No. 8 managed to birdie the last in a round of a one-under par 71 and then ignored all request for autographs but for one person as he made a bee-line from the scorer’s hut to the locker room.

That person, and woman named Bethany, is a fortnight shy of giving birth and she managed to get McIlroy to autograph the white top she was wearing over her large ‘baby bump’.

It was probably one of the more bizarre autograph requests of McIlroy.

“Rory’s one of my favourite golfers ever and it was great of him to give me an autograph,” said Bethany.

“I am due to have a girl so unfortunately I won’t be able to call her Rory but it were to be boy maybe, well … ”
