Erin Hills, Wisconsin ….
Andrew “Beef” Johnston who booked his place for the weekend and thanks, in part, to four hand delivered peanut and jelly sandwiches on route to 73 to be inside the then top-30 at two-under par.
“Beef” had been up early for his 7.18am tee time but forgot to stock up on sustenance, so much so, his manager grabbed four sandwiches from the Player’s Lounge and met Johnston on the tenth tee.
“I just forgot to grab a few sandwiches before I went to the first tee so I asked Sean my manager to meet me at 10 but I was not expecting four”, Johnston said smiling.
“I said to get me a couple but given Sean is from Ireland I guess that means four.
“I had breakfast but sometimes I feel like I may have an omelette or something like that, and maybe a bit of cereal, but it is a long walk out there and I just wanted to make sure I had enough food in the bag but I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, just love them.
“But then I only ate one of them as I had a banana, as well”.
And Danny Willett’s miserable post-Masters run continued when a back injury forced him out before tee-off.
Willett, who shot the highest score of 81 on day one, was clearly in some discomfort on the range ahead of his tee-off before advising officials.
It is the second straight occasion in the U.S. Willett has pulled out as it was also a back injury that ruled him out of last month’s Players, and this following a 79.
