Lee Westwood has shown he’s not about to sit back and relax and wait for the expected Ryder Cup ‘wildcard’ pick by entering this coming week’s D + D Czech Masters.
The Englishman has never competed previously in the event but given he’s currently lying 13th on the ‘European’ Ryder Cup points list and 12th on the ‘World’ points list the 43-year old Westwood heads the list of Czech entries after the field was released late yesterday by the European Tour.
And joining Westwood is fellow Englishman Andy Sullivan and Matthew Fitzpatrick.
Sullivan and Fitzpatrick are among five rookies almost certain to qualify automatically when qualifying ends at the close of next week’s Made in Denmark tournament.
But by playing in Prague Sullivan and Fitzpatrick, who are currently lying a respective eighth and ninth overall as the top-nine automatic qualifiers, and clearly out to further cement their position in Darren Clarke’s side.
And Fitzpatrick’s position looks even more assured as Scotland’s Russell Knox, and one place behind the young Englishman on the list, has elected not to tee-up in this coming week’s Wyndham Championship, and the final European Team qualifying event for PGA Tour based Europeans.
Clarke is set to announce on August 30th his three Hazeltine ‘wildcard’ picks.
