Australia’s Daniel Gaunt muscled his way to a three-way share of the lead at seven under par and then singled out Supercaddy John ‘Ronnie’ Roberts for special praise.
Gaunt posted a seven under par 65 to join Dane Lasse Jenson and Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello in bright and ideal scoring conditions atop of the Muncheon Golf Club course.
It is the Melbourne-born golfer’s lowest round since posting a first day 64 on route to finishing second in last year’s Czech Challenge on the Challenge Tour.
‘Ronnie’ began working with Gaunt a fortnight ago in Austria before teaming again this week for their second straight main European Tour event together in Munich.
“I have always been a very quick player and Ronnie has slowed me down, and I think for the best,” said the Burr Hill based Gaunt.

“Our yardages have been pretty much spot on for the two weeks we’ve been together,
“I’ve been playing better and better and I’m feeling more comfortable out here in the situation now.”
Gaunt teamed up with ‘Ronnie’ for a first time at the Lyoness Open when Gaunt sent a text to Ronnie’s caddying colleague ‘Roy the Taxi’, and asking ‘Roy’ if he would sort him out with a caddie for the Austrian event.

“Daniel’s a really nice guy but has never trusted any caddie to control the ‘numbers’ which are crucial in this game,” said Ronnie relaxing sipping on an Erdinger Weisbeer in the comfort of the Marriott Munich.
“It’s been a great start to the tournament but the key now for Daniel is not to chase a score and I’ve told him that three rounds of one under par each should ensure a top-10 finish and entry into next week’s French Open.
“So if we can get a sufficient number of putts to drop over the next three days then we could also be knocking on the door come the back nine on Sunday afternoon.”
