Las Vegas born Scott Piercy drew a full house to shoot a nine under par 63 and equal the Golf Club of Houston course record on day one of the Shell Houston Open.
Piercy, 36 was three under after his opening nine holes, and the back nine on the course, but then stormed home to play his inward half in six under par including posting five birdies in succession from his ninth hole.
Fellow American J B Holmes had the chance to tie Piercy after moving to eight under par through 14 holes but played his last four in one over par in a round of a 65.
Also sharing second place is in-form German Alex Cejka who captured the recent Puerto Rico Open.

Piercy has been off the PGA Tour for six months last year while recovering from elbow surgery and said he still hadn’t felt quite right before arriving in Houston.
However the Nevada golfer could not have been happier.
“Everything went right,” said Piercy, who last won on the Tour at the Canadian Open in 2012.
“I hit the ball so good. It’s been building. I kept hitting good shot after good shot. By the end, I was (only) trying to make birdies.”
