Adam Scott has moved into a share of the lead after two rounds in the defence of his Australian Masters title at Royal Melbourne.
Scott, who last week added the Australian PGA title to his growing list of achievements, shot a five-under-par 66 on Friday, taking a share of the lead with Victorian Nathan Holman.
If Scott were to claim a victory he then only need to win next fortnight’s Australian Open at Royal Sydney to become only the second player in the history of Australian golf behind Robert Allenby to win the ‘Australian Grand Slam – Australian PGA, Australian Masters and the Australian Open’ in teh same season.
Holman fired an impressive 6-under 65 and he and Scott are one shot clear of Australian pair Matthew Griffin and Nick Cullen.
Holman’s round included a double bogey and a bogey, an eagle and seven birdies.
After birdies at the first three holes, Scott shot 11 straight pars before scoring a birdie at the 15th.
Cullen, who only turned professional four years ago, fired an opening round 6-under-par for a two-shot overnight lead over Scott and young German Max Kieffer who has Australian-born caddy Graeme Heinrich caddying for him.
Cullen continued to impress with a 2-under-par 69 to retain a share of the lead, but it was Griffin who fired the most impressive morning round.
Starting the day at 2-under, four shots behind Cullen, Griffin fired a 6-under 65 to be breathing down Cullen’s neck over the last six holes.
Cullen bogied the par-four ninth, the second last hole of the day, to allow Griffin a share of the lead.
American Matt Kucher was one of the big movers on day two and shooting a five-under 66 to be in contention at five-under for the tournament and in is return to Royal Melbourne after being a member of the victorious 2012 USA Presidents Cup side.
