Jamieson & Lynn Team To Deliver GB & I Important Seve Trophy Point.

Scotland’s Scott Jamieson and England’s David Lynn and Scott Jamieson teamed to produce a dramatic comeback to win their match and help Great Britain & Ireland edge to within one point on day two of the Seve Trophy at St. Nom-la-Breteche.

Jamieson birdied the last two holes, both putts of five feet, to turn a match their match from being one down with two holes to play and win one up against all-Italian rivals f Francesco Molinari and Matteo Manassero.

It meant Sam Torrance’s GB & I side won all three opening matches after the first out pair of Paul Casey and Simon Khan defeated Mikko Ilonen and Thorbjørn Olesen 3 and 2, and an inspired Jamie Donaldson and his partner Marc Warren defeated Thomas Björn and Miguel Angel Jiménez 4 & 2.

Continental Europe, who led 3½-1½ after the opening day of fourballs, claimed their first point of the second session when Nicolas Colsaerts and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño equalled the biggest winning margin in the tournament’s history, the pair recording a 6 & 5 win over Paul Lawrie and Stephen Gallacher.

Joost Luiten and Gregory Bourdy then doubled that tally when they held off a determined fightback from English pair Tommy Fleetwood and Chris Wood.

Luiten and Bourdy, who had combined so impressively on the first day, were on course for another comfortable victory when they were three up after 14 holes and two up with two to play, but Wood’s eagle on the 17th ensured it would go down to the final hole.

Both Wood and Fleetwood had birdie putts on the last to halve the match, but neither could convert so the session ended 3-2 in favour of Great Britain & Ireland.

That result meant Torrance’s team trail 5½-4½.

“The golf that was played was beautiful; Jamie Donaldson was nine under on his own,” he said.

“It was fantastic.  Then Scott Jamieson and David Lynn were one down with two to play and we could easily have lost that point but we ended up winning it.  Chris Wood and Tommy Fleetwood had great chances too.  It was a shame for them they didn’t make them but it’s a great come back and we are only a point behind.”

Continental Europe captain José María Olazábal, himself a winning Ryder Cup Captain last year, said: ““There is just a fraction of disappointment. We let a point go with the Italians; they had the match under control until the very end.

“Overall 3 2 is not that bad – it’s pretty much what we’ve said all along, these guys play great golf, and you have to be on your toes.

“When you play at this kind of level, it’s decided on little things, and today was a good proof of that.”

Torrance opted to leave out English pair Khan and Lynn for the first of Saturday’s four-match foursome sessions, with two new pairings being used.

Lawrie and Gallacher remain in tandem, and have a chance to avenge Colsaerts and Fernandez-Castaño in the first match out.

Donaldson will again partner Warren against Luiten and Bourdy, while Olazábal unveiled his first re-jigged pairings of the week in the third and fourth matches.

Olesen and Molinari will face Jamieson and Wood, before Jiménez and Manassero come up against Casey and Fleetwood, with Björn and Ilonen sitting out the morning session.
