Little known American Luke Guthrie easily earned the ‘Cool Hand Luke’ tag in needing just 19 putts to race to a three shot lead on the opening day of the BMW Masters.

The 23-year old Michigan player had missed the cut in seven of his closing nine holes on the 2013 PGA Tour and while he’s stared the 2014 season playing all four rounds in two events, his appearance atop of the leader board is very much a surprise on his debut in Shanghai.

In fact, the leader board after the first day of the $7m event is more akin to a PGA Tour event with Guthrie, John Daly and Peter Uihlein made it a Stars and Stripes trio in this European Tour event.
