Laser Surgery Sees Sergio Garcia Shoot 59 Not Counting Two Bogeys & A 17th Hole Triple

Recent laser surgery has seen Spain’s Sergio Garcia shoot a 59 if you don’t count two bogeys and a 17th hole triple bogey on day two of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship Dubai.

Garcia, competing in his first event since the Ryder Cup, also recorded two eagles and nine birdies in a course record equallying eight-under par 64.

The Spaniard’s effort matched the record set by five others – Lee Westwood (2009) and then in 2010 by Ross Fisher, Peter Hanson, Alvaro Quiros and Martin Kaymer.

Garcia commenced with four birdies in his opening five holes and then raced to seven under par for the day with birdies at eight and then 10 and 11.

However his progress was halted with bogeys at 12 and 13.

Garcia then proceeded to finish in inward nine – eagle, birdie, triple bogey, birdie and then holed a 16-foot eagle putt from off the green at the last.”I hit the ball nicely, drove the ball very well and hit a lot of good shots,” he said.

“I just had a little roller-coaster ride near the end  and I feel that is from rust from these seven weeks without competing, and you know, I need to sharped that up.  But it feels good to be able to shoot a good round.”

And helping Garcia to record his lowest European Tour round since a 64 on route to victory in last year’s Castellon Masters was his decision to pack the new TaylorMade R Bladez  irons in his bag this week.

“I have been testing the irons for a little while now and they’ve felt really good in practice but then the only way you can really test them is in competition, so that’s why I decided to put them in the bag this week,” he said.

Garcia visited a Valencia eye-specialist following The Open and it in the weeks following the Ryder Cup he underwent laser surgery in Oviedo.

“The main reason for the surgery was that with the contact lenses I was feeling very, very uncomfortable, so there was nothing to it and just five minutes on each eye,” he said.

“Before it was like if I was aiming to a little spot on the course it would get a little blurry and I would lose it a bit but now it is so much sharper.

“I didn’t realise it to July because I always thought I had great vision with just a little stigmatism in one eye and about 0.75 in the other.

“So after getting my eyesight the doctor showed me how bad my eyes really were and she suggested either glasses or contact lenses but they didn’t feel comfortable at all.

“Maybe 10 years ago I may have been worried but nowadays it’s easy and I can also drive my car better now because I can read all the signs (laughing).”

And Garcia remarked how good it was to be reunited on Tuesday night with his Medinah ‘miracle workers’.

“It was great and good to see them again after the Ryder Cup, so it was good to be down at the beach party and to view some of the official video that was launched that night,” he said.

“So I’m looking forward to sitting down and watching the full video.

“But the Ryder Cup is now passed and while it was amazing we have to move on.”
