Rory McIlroy is on the verge of Rodman Wanamaker glory after roaring to a three shot lead at the close of the rain-affected PGA Championship at Kiawah Island.
McIlroy resumed his round at 7.45am local time Sunday and then walked off some two hours later shooting a five under par 65 and moving to seven under par with Sweden’s Carl Pettersson in second place at four under par.
Storms halted play at 4.50pm local time Saturday before officials called a halt to play around 6.15pm.
McIlroy had just bogeyed the ninth but returned to bogey the hardest hole in competition this week before picking up birdies at 15 and 16.
It’s been 14 months since McIlroy captured the gleaming U.S. Open trophy and the 23-year old is now in the driving seat to join fellow Irishman Padraig Harrington as winner of the PGA Championship.
McIlroy will now commence his final round at 1.44pm local time in the company of Pettersson and in-form American Bo Van Pelt who also posted a 67 to be sharing third place with former Masters champion Trevor Immelman on three under par.
