Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts intends going fishing on Monday morning ahead of what could be the biggest catch of his life – a wildcard pick for next month’s Ryder Cup.
Colsaerts was the only player who could change the standings but after a gallant share of 19th place in the Johnnie Walker Championship the 29-year old will now have to rely on a Jose Maria Olazabal ‘wildcard’ pick.
“It’s been a very long summer and I’ve only had one week off in the last nine weeks,” said Colsaerts.
“That’s just because I wanted it badly. It’s been a pretty long time with my head down so I’m quite relieved I’m having some days off now to chill off.
“It’s been more mentally demanding that physical but then if someone asked me to play 18 holes tomorrow, I would probably go play.
“But mentally I am pretty much drained.”
And when Colsaerst was reminded that he is the current World Match-Play champion and no other player has had eight other top-nine finishes he hoped that effort would see him become the only European Team ‘rookie’ heading to Medinah later next month.
“That record says it all and yes, of course I want a ‘wildcard’ pick,” he said.
“No one also did not make a statement big enough this week to get in front of me on the rankings, so I would like to think I am still in a pretty good position.
“I am nervously confident of getting a pick.”
And Colsaerts indicated he will go fishing on Monday morning and then return to the house he’s been renting this week near Gleneagles to watch Olazabal’s announcement on TV live at Noon (UK time).
“I haven’t caught any fish yet but I’d like to catch some tomorrow morning,” he smiled.
“I had to find something to do and think about something else.”
