Oliver Wilson Climbs To Top Of The Mountain On Day Two At Madeira Islands Open

England’s Oliver Wilson is well on target to capture a first-ever Tour title in climbing to the top of the mountain on the second day of the Madeira Islands Open.

The 31-year old former Ryder Cup star added a blistering 65 to his opening 66 to move 13-under par on the Santa da Serra course.

“I again played really nice and no bogeys after two rounds is always very pleasing,” said Wilson.

“I am just trying to play sensible and felt also that I left a few out there.

Wilson went to lunch one in front of the Sweden-born duo of Magnus Carlsson and 19-year old Joakim Largergren, who each recorded rounds of 66, are next best on 12-under par.

The Mansfield-born Wilson produced his lowest starting 36-hole tally since a pair of 66s over the first two days of the 2010 Hong Kong Open.

But of immediate interest to the Callaway staff player is that first Tour win after finishing runner-up on nine occasions.

Victory would also afford Wilson a one year Tour exemption to the end of 2013 and a place in next fortnight’s flagship BWM PGA Championship at Wentworth and where in 2008 he finished runner-up to Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez.

He started his second round in superb manner when he chipped in from 15 feet and then birdied the next from just six inches.

“To start in that manner was great and gave me the momentum I needed,” he said.

“But there is a long way to go and the low scoring is going to carry on so I am going to have to keep going forward, and going forward low.

“However I’m presently leading by one and I’m not worried about who is behind me and just keeping focussed on what is ahead of me.”

England’s Nick Dougherty, who like Wilson lost his main Tour card at the end of last year, is assured of playing all four rounds in shooting a second round 71 and move to four under par.
