Rory McIlroy and Darrren Clarke were honoured in London Monday night with Laureus Sports Awards.
McIlroy won the ‘Breakthrough Sports’ award following last year’s thrilling Congressional command performance to win the U.S. Open.
And fellow Northern Irishman Darren Clarke won the ‘Comeback of the Year’ award for his Open Championship success at Royal St. George’s.
Clarke was handed his award by golfing legend, Gary Player.
“It was a long time getting there,” said Clarke reflecting on his personal and sporting comeback since the death of his wife Heather.
“You battle on, you battle on and my chance came along.
“I’ve had a tough time in my personal life but I’ve been lucky. Sport gives us opportunities to battle on and shine through. I’ve met a wonderful lady in my life, Alison, and I’ve come through the other side.”
McIlroy, who did not attend the awards ceremony, commented on Twitter: “Very honoured to have won the Laureus breakthrough of the year award last night! Nice to be recognised among some great sportspeople!”
The awards are another achievement for the European Tour after Germany’s Martin Kaymer won a ‘Breakthrough’ award a year ago in Abu Dhabi for his 2010 U.S. PGA Championship victory.
