Six months after singing his praise, Darren Clarke has reacted to a severe downturn in form by sacking his British Open winning caddy, John Mulrooney.
Clarke gave fellow Irishman Mulrooney, and also aged 42, his notice after Clarke missed the halfway cut in Abu Dhabi with scores of 72 and 81.
Mulrooney teamed with Clarke purely by co-incidence for last May’s Iberdrola Open in Majorca after firstly David Howell and then Maarten Lafeber, who Mulrooney was to caddy, both became injured and withdrew.
Clarke came close to sacking the Bray-born Mulrooney at the Barclays Scottish Open and a week before their Open success at Royal St. George’s.
However when a player is playing poorly as Clarke has been for the past six months, the caddy is usually the first to go.
In his nine events since capturing golf’s oldest Major Clarke has missed the cut in three but also finished no higher than 35th in Switzerland.
Mulrooney is the second straight Open Championship winning caddy to loose his job shortly after success after Louis Oosthuizen, and winner of the 2010 Open Championship released his caddy ‘Zac’.
However ‘Zac’ has rebounced after teaming with fellow South African Branden Grace who has won back-to-back on this year’s Race to Dubai schedule.
