Tiger Woods claim to 21st spot on the World Rankings was short-lived with Spain’s big-hitting Alvaro Quiros unseating the American in capturing the Dubai World Championship.
Quiros shot from 52nd to 21st on the rankings when he eagled the 18th to win the season-ending event by two strokes with a 19-under par tally.
It was the 28-year old Cadiz golfer’s sixth Race to Dubai success and his third in two years on the ‘Desert Swing’ after capturing last year’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and this year’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
Quiros also has moved into fourth place overall on the European Ryder Cup points table.
And after just missing out on automatic selection last time around, the affable Spaniard now heads into the New Year primed to make his Ryder Cup debut at Medinah.
“It’s great to really jump up high on the World Rankings because it means I am into the Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship, so that is the four Majors for me next year and that was my goal coming into this week,” he said.
“As for the Ryder Cup it is still a long way off but I know if I start the New Year well then playing the Ryder Cup could be a reality for me.
“Being into the four Majors and WGCs next year is going to help me a lot.
“After going so close last year, I really want to be there next year but, as I say it’s still a long way ahead.”
