The England duo of World No. 1 Lee Westwood and compatriot Ian Poulter said they’d welcome being among those to carry the 2012 London Olympic torch.
The 2012 London Olympic Games torch will begin its 70-day journey around the UK starting at Land’s End on May 18th, 2012.
A total of 8,000 people will get to carry the torch.
Former double British Open winning Greg Norman carried the Olympic flame over the Sydney Harbour Bridge ahead of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
And joining Norman in also carrying the Olympic torch was countrywoman and former long time running Women’s World No. 1, Karrie Webb.
Westwood resides at Worksop in Nottinghamshire while Poulter resides in Milton Keynes and not far from either Luton or Cambridge where the torch will be carried.
“I would love to carry the Olympic torch and especailly with golf to be included in the 2016 Olmpics in Brazil,” said Westwood.
“That would be great and if someone were to nominate me it would be fabulous, and certainly a great honour.”
The torch will pass through Nottingham on June 28th and close to Westwood’s abode while Poulter will have the opportunity in either Luton on July 7th before it heads north-east to Cambridge on July 8th.
“I would love to carry the Olympic torch, and if it’s convenient I would welcome the opportunity,” said the current World No. 22.
“I would be an honour to be asked but then I am not sure if I would get it.
“Hopefully, someone in my area will nominate me and if successful, I would need to go to the gym.”
And Poulter has welcomed news the 2012 Ryder Cup was awarded to the Le National course in Paris.
“Paris National is a good venue, and while I know they are going to upgrade the hotel, the facilities and the golf course is pretty good,” he said.
“It’s a great spectator course and France was my pick to win the vote. It’s easily the best course of the five nations.”
Poulter was commenting ahead of this week’s Volvo World Match-Play Championship at Finca Cortesin in Spain.
The Englishman will play Italy’s and fellow winning Ryder Cup team-mate Francesco Molinari in tomorrow’s opening round match.
