Scot Connor Syme felt right at home battling continuing strong winds to move to within just four shots of the lead heading to the weekend rounds of the Estrella Damm Andalucian Masters on Spain’s Costa del Sol.
Syme, 28, birdied five of his inward nine holes in a round of a five-under 67 to move to within four shots of the lead on the host Sotogrande course at San Roque.
Syme capped his round with three birdies in succession from the 10th hole with the best holing a 33-footer at the 10th hole and then draining a 28-footer for a birdie ‘2’ from behind the flag at 17.

He said: “The difference today was that I holed a few putts, and really I could not have played any better.
“I hit that great shot into 10 and that spurred on a good run of holes.
“The winds made it challenging, and while it is a warmer wind than back home, thankfully we’re used to playing in these conditions, so I am trying to tap into that as much as I can”.
It is also a welcome return to Sotogrande for Spain who contested the 2017 Sotogrande Amateur Masters prior to turning pro the same year, and an event first won by then fellow amateur Rory McIlroy in 2007.
Syme said: “That was a few years ago now but it’s been nice coming back to the club as a member of the DP World Tour.
“It’s brought back fond memories and great to see the club hosting the Tour”.
Good friend and hotel room-mate Ewen Ferguson is just one shot back but ruiing but dropping two shots over his closing three holes, also in a score of 67.
Ferguson, who defends his CB Qatar Masters title next week, was seven-under for his round, including grabbing a birdie hat-trick from his 10th hole, ahead of the late mishap.
Three players – Spain’s Adrian Otagui (69), South African Louis De Jager (68) and Frenchman Jeong weon Ko (67) – share the lead on nine-under.
Reigning US Open champ Wyndham Clark posted a 72 to be tied with Ryder Cup Singles rival Bob MacIntyre (70) at two under.
And Marc Warren, who headed the Scots with an opening round of 70, added a 71 to be also well-place at three-under and tied 30th.
