Super Spaniard Jon Rahm carried extra special motivation onto the last green on the opening day of the 44th hosting of the Ryder Cup – Seve Ballesteros.
Rahm is contesting his second Ryder Cup, having been a member of the losing Whistling Straits 2021 losing side to a red-hot USA outfit.
But as last year’s Masters champion stepped onto the green at the 18th hole of the Marco Simone course he was reminded of the greatest golfer Spain has produced – the late Seve Ballesteros.
The reminder of Ballesteros, and a former winning European Team captain and a playing member of eight European teams, and four of those winning sides, came as Rahm stood over his eagle putt and was deliverd by his rookie playing partner in Dane Nicolai Hojgaard.

“I’ve got to give Nicolai props because over here on 18, he gave me the freedom to basically go at it, and he told me to hit a putt, try to make it. And he said, “What would Seve do,” right, “do it for Seve”, said Rahm
“I don’t know if he would have quite made it like that, but I’m sure glad that it went in”.
Rahm, who had already chipped in for eagle on 16, needed to make his eagle effort on the 18th green to win the match against American opponents Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka who were at 1-up and both in close for birdies that would guarantee them a 1up win over their European rivals
Though Rahm was having none it and hit the long uphill eagle ‘3’ putt into the back of the cup, so much his Callaway ball jumped slightly in the air before falling back into the cup for the win and the half point.
Rahm’s eagle took Europe to their 6.5-1.5 lead at the end of the opening day in Rome.
