Siem Ends Eight-Year Tour Winless Drought With Hero Indian Open Victory Take-Away

Germany’s affable Marcel Siem has ended an eight-year DP Tour World winless drought with his Hero Indian Open victory take-away in New Delhi.

Siem, 42, held off the ‘shrivers’, as he said would be the scenario if he won, in posting a closing round of 68 to capture what is a fifth DP World Tour success and win by a shot on the host DGF host course in the Indian capital.

Wearing the most colourful of shirts, Siem only just managed to clear the water guarding the green with his third shot into the 18th but then left his lengthy birdie putt some five-foot shy of the hole before holing a testy four-foot to seal the win.

In holing the winning putt, Siem took off his Callaway visor and tossed into ground with delight.

Then after the congratulatory handshakes, Siem stood on the green raising glenched fists skyward in a proud ‘V’ sign, and with the smile on his face saying it all.

Siem said: “My goal was to be as calm as possible but that lie was horrible on the last so it got the heart rate going up for sure.

“I’ve worked really hard. It’s crazy. A second kick-start for my career.

“I was gone – lost my card, Challenge Tour, Q School – thank you so much to my whole family and my team, my sponsors.

“I think there’s more to come now.

“This means a lot because two years ago I wasn’t even sure if I could still compete on the DP World Tour and now I’m a winner again, come on!”

Compatriot Yannik Paul, who led both the second and third rounds, played the last day alongside Siem to also par the last in his score of 70 but after a disappointing last round that included just two birdies but also 16 pars.

Dutchman Joost Luiten looked on in agony when he eagle putt at the last just missed its mark to make birdie in his round of 68 to finish third at 12-under.
