….. Jumeirah Estates, Dubai
Despite a last hole penalty David Law was pretty chuffed in being greeted by a Red Arrows and Emirates Airline flypast moments after his opening round at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
Law, 31, superbly bounced back in sauna-like conditions from being one-over after nine holes and pick-up to late round birdies but then bizarrely take a preferred lie up the 18th, to incur a one-stroke penalty in an eventual two-under par 70 on the Earth course at Jumeirah Estates.
However, it was skywards everyone was looking as an Emirates A380 accompanied by the Red Arrows flew over the course, and with Law sticking his head out of the scorer’s hut to watch the spectacular flyover.
Law said to TourMiss & The Daily Record: “That was pretty cool and very timely flying over just as I finished the round.

The famed Red Arrows, and without the A380, will be repeat the flyover at Sunday afternoon’s presentation.
Law is making his first appearance here at the elite, no-cut DP World Tour finale, and with his final hole birdie last Sunday at the Nedbank Challenge assuring the Scot 51st place on the Race to Dubai money-list, and two places inside the leading 53 teeing-up this week.
His opening day’s effort was a mix of four birdies and while sticking out like the proverbial sore thumb is an eight-hole double, it was his actions of a sun-baked course in taking a preferred lie at the last that slightly soured what should have been a three-under tally
Law said: “It was a good day’s work in the end. This is my first time playing here, and only saw the course for a first time yesterday. It’s playing tough with the rough up, the greens nice and firm and the pins pretty tough to get at.
“My patience was key today. I was pretty steady. Holed some good putts near the turn that kept the round going. So, two-under is a nice start”.
Law has plenty of family support this week, as evident by those waiting to catch-up with him after his round, and with the week also being a last ahead of a seven-week break before returning to the UAE mid-January and the start of the 2023 season.
He said: “I’ve been excited to qualify for this event for a first time, and it’s great to be here, but it’s more about treating this week with a lot of focus and intensity.
“You’re not here to simply enjoy the week as you’re here to have a great tournament. Last week was an intense week and mentally it was quite draining, as I knew I was on the mark of qualifying for this week.
“It was not the be all and end all if I didn’t qualify but it is still a nice reward to birdie the last on Sunday and qualify after my good season work, so it would be great to finish it off properly.
“It’s a week you always want to be a part of and I think after being here this week, it’s an event I want to be playing in every year.”
