Scotland’s Russell Knox battled his way into the weekend rounds after the weather had earlier done the Scot little favour at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
Knox birdied three of his closing five holes in posting a second round three-under par 68 and moved to two-under in the £stg 4.7m event on the Port Royal course.
And there was none better than the delight of grabbing a birdie at the last as Knox revealed in the video hereunder
A day earlier the Scot was out in the second group on the first day braving wind gusts nudging 30 mph and also three drenching rain squalls ahead of respite in the much calmer conditions on day two.
“It was really brutal out there and a real test of patience, so just happy to be off the course and in the clubhouse as it’s not fun out there”, said Knox post his first round.
“At the ninth, we were on the front edge of the green there and I’ve never experienced wind that strong, I think, on a golf course.
“I mean, we were down on the ground holding an umbrella. My fingers were like cramping I’m holding on so tight and it was pouring rain as hard as it’s ever rained. It was an interesting day. It rained like three or four times and when it did, it was unplayable when it was raining because the winds picked up. It was definitely an interesting day, one which I’ll never forget”.
Indeed, the course was playing three shots easier on day two than the 74 strokes average a day earlier.
Canadian Taylor Pendrith, and coming also from Knox’s side of the opening round draw, set a new tournament course record of a 10-under par 61 that included an eagle and nine birdies plus a lone bogey to head to round three at 11-under par and a shot clear of American Patrick Rodgers who signed for 64.
Former Scottish Open champ Graeme McDowell (67) is at five-under par and remarked: “The golf course went from abusive yesterday to being so benign today that someone could tear this place apart”.
