Scotland’s Grant Forrest produced an amazing scoring display of an ace, two eagles and a pair of birdies in a sizzling six-under par 65 on the opening day of the Acciona Spanish Open in Madrid.

The Craigielaw golfer eagled the par-5 fourth hole, birdied both the fifth and six holes, holed out with 181-yard 8-iron at the par-3 ninth hole and also eagled the par-5 14th on the Club de Campo course in the Spanish capital.

Forrest had bogeyed the second and was six-under from the fourth to ninth holes to be out in just 31 strokes and then home in 34 shots

He said: “It was three eagles, with a hole-in-one.  There was a bit of everything in there. I hit a few loose tee shots but holed a bunker shot for the first of the eagles and had the hole-in-one in nine.

“Yes, a mixed bag but managed to come out with a good score so I am happy about that.

“The hole-in-one at nine landed just past the hole and spun back into the cup.  “We couldn’t see the bottom of the hole but heard the cheers. It’s my first one on your, so it’s pretty special.

“I had three good chances the last three holes, hitting three good putts that didn’t go in. But, to be fair, I’d holed my fair share earlier in the day.

“Three years ago, when I first played here, the greens, which are really small, were quite firm. It was really quite tricky if you were out of position or not precise.

“They are quite soft at the moment, but I think they will firm up as the week goes on. But it will be good being out early in the morning.”

Forrest heads into the second trailing four shots adrift of England’s Ross McGowan who posted a 10-under par 61 while World No. 1 Jon Rahm signed for  63 to be two shots back in seeking to become only the second player in the history of the event to win three times.

Borders David Drysdale is the leading shot in producing a bogey-free 64 that was capped with three birdies in succession from his third hole.

‘Double-D’ said: “It was just a really solid round, hitting most of the fairways and most of the greens.

“The greens are soft so it is target golf, and you could see why the scoring from this morning was low.

“In making the last seven or eight cuts, I’ve been treading water, staying in the same spot. Today was a nice day, but I need to kick on from it.

“I’ve got four or five events to go so I just need to get the head down and grind it out.”

Drysdale is lying 122nd on the Race to Dubai and will be looking for some good results over his remaining five events to be assured of retaining a Tour card for 2022.

Scott Jamieson and Marc Warren were just outside the top-10 with five-under par 66s.
