Top-Ranked Scot MacIntyre Not About To Hang-Up His Shinty Stick

Oban Celtic’s Bob MacIntyre tees-up in this week’s 20th Alfred Dunhill Links Championship sporting a bunch of bruises from his side’s 8-nil thumping last Saturday of Aberdour.

As the best golfers in Europe were struggling last Saturday along the shores of Lake Michigan, MacIntyre was loving being in the deep end of the Mowi Senior C League at Silversands.

And while Rory McIlroy missed-out in contesting the 2015 Open at St. Andrews after injuring his leg in a friendly football match, MacIntrye in speaking with Record Sport says he has no injury fears playing his beloved shinty.

He said: “Nope.  I’m 55th in the world playing shinty. I think you could get close to No 1 in the world playing shinty.

“And as much as it’s dangerous. I play indoor fives in the winter as well, with friends. I get asked a lot on the shinty pitch asking `what are you doing playing shinty’. I reply, the same reason you are, because I enjoy it. That’s the reason I play.

“Golf’s my job, I play shinty that’s my off time. I try and find a balance in my life. I went to Morocco my first season as a pro and I think I’d made 11 cuts out of 12, and I still wasn’t enjoying it.

“Away on my own, no family, meeting new guys out here but I then decided to go play shinty and if you look at the performances from Morocco three years ago, it’s working”.

MacIntyre is among 11 Scots teeing-up in this week’s £stg 3.72m event.
