Patrick Reed bravely buried any lingering controversy and producing a masterclass round to capture the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
Reed went into the final round on the South Course sharing the lead at 10-under and left his rivals fighting for second place in winning by four shots with a three-under par 69 for a 13-under victory tally.
The win is the Texan-born Reed’s ninth PGA Tour title and while a member also of the European Tour, it is Reed’s 10th taste of success on U.S. soil.
While the centre of controversy on day three, there was no denying Reed’s play was superb and will set him up well heading into the first of the two WGCs in coming weeks and then in arriving at Augusta National in early April.
The 30-year capped his round with a fifth hole eagle along with birdies at the seventh and ninth holes before a run of eight straight pars before capping victory in holing an eight-footer for birdie at the last.
And despite being the centre of controversy at the end of day three, Reed offered nothing to any of his rivals and was a picture of contrentration and determination. He was impervious to any distraction.
