Russell Knox superbly again displayed his Scottish golf skills in battling ‘strange’ sloppy conditions to be in the clubhouse lying third late on day two of the Mayakoba Championship.
Knox was three-under par coming to last but was clearly distracted in posting his only bogey in a round of 69 to be just a shot behind the American duo of Tony Finau (66) and Tom Hoge (67) atop of the board at nine-under par.
The Florida-based Scot was superb with his irons including hitting all opening nine greens in regulation but then posting eight straight pars ahead of three-putting 18.
Knox said: “It was a strange day as there was a lot of stuff going, and given the conditions, our group had to take a few drops while there were also rulings.
“To be honest I just didn’t do a very good job of handling that aspect of the day.
“I never felt all that comfortable as I was a little guidey out there, so I need to go kind of free up this weekend. I know my swing is good and I’m rolling the ball well, so there’s no reason for me to be a little tight like that.”
The Caribbean Sea course had one-and-three-quarter inches of rain dumped on it in the five hours right up to the intended start before officials called an hour’s delay and put a ‘preferred lie’ rule in place at Playa del Carmen.
Before the decision it had meant Knox and his fellow morning starters warming-up in the rain.
Knox headed into day two of the £stg 5.3m leading by a shot and after three birdies in eight holes found himself then three shots clear of the field.
A look at the leaderboard early in Round 2 @MayakobaGolf:

Knox is also looking to go one better than five years ago when he lost-out in a play-off and a week after capturing the 2015 WGC – HSBC Champions in China.
And Knox and his Mexican-born wife, Andrea returned a year later in 2016 to finish third.
So, what is about Mexico?
He said smiling: “I guess it’s the tequila and tacos.
“I just love this place and love this golf course. I posted a really good score yesterday. Today, I wasn’t quite as good. Not quite as sharp but managed to keep the round going.”
