Was it a plane? Was it a train? No. it was a Bryson DeChambeau drive with a flight time of 8.2 seconds over a distance of 401.3 yards.
The US Open winner produced the drive while warming-up for the Masters by claiming a 400-yard golfing missile in his home town of Dallas.
Compare DeChambear’s drive to the 12 seconds flight time and just 40-yards the Wright Bros managed in their historic first ‘heavier-than-air’ powered flight.
While most of the top players are preparing for the Masters by playing in this weekend’s Zozo Championship, DeChambeau was at home in Dallas breaking the golfing sound barrier with a drive of 403.1 yards.
Just think if DeChambeau reproduces such a drive down ‘Tea Olive, and the first hole at Augusta National he would have just 52-yards to the green.
And golfs’ ‘Mad Scientist’ achieved the effort without his promise post Winged Foot of a 48-inch driver.
And the American had digital evidence of his efforts.
In repeating what many have already written but imagine a golf ball in the air for 8.2m seconds.
Compare that with the following:
Unsain Bolt holds the 100m world record in a time of 9.58 seconds.
A cheetah, and the world’s fastest animal, has been clocked at covering 100-yards in 5.95 second.
An F1 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in about 2.6 seconds and from 0 to 300 km / h in 10.6 seconds.
Of course, when DeChambeau arrives at Augusta there are a lot of variables, including elevation changes and wind, and a driver might not be the proper play off every tee for DeChambeau, while some shots require a draw or a fade.
DeChambeau led the PGA Tour in 2020 with a driving distance of 322.1 yards, while the Tour average for the season was 296.4 yards.
But to post a drive of over 400-yards just over a fortnight before the Masters is scary.
Scary for the green jacketed members at Augusta National.
