Laird Goes Low As Lewton Shoots PGA/Korn Ferry Career Best Day One Sanderson Farms

Martin Laird grabbed five birdies in a four-under par 68 to be inside the top-10 early on day one of the PGA Tour’s $US 6.6m Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi.

The now Denver-based Scot, and competing in a third of the four new 2020/21 season events, capped his round to be four-under after 13 holes before his only bogey at 14 ahead of a penultimate hole birdie.

The Scot was in the clubhouse as the leading European and trailing just four shots behind the American duo of Jimmy Walker and Charley Hoffman.

Fellow Scot Russell Knox signed for a level par 72.

Woburn’s Steve Lewton superbly shoots a 68 on day one of the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi.

AND fantastic to see England’s Steve Lewton tied with Laird in going out to shoot a bogey-free four-under par 68 in only a second PGA Tour appearance and a first in five years.

Lewton, and starting from the 10th hole, grabbed birdies at the 12th, 14th, fifth and ninth holes, and with the pick being at the 12th and the third hole of his round, where he landed a 143-yard second shot to just 18 inches.

The second birdie of his round was also a gem when in finding a greenside bunker with his second and some 95-feet shy of the flag at the par-5 14th, Lewton splashed out to 12-feet and superbly holed the birdie ‘4’ putt.

The Woburn attached Lewton has been competing on the secondary Korn Ferry Tour while his only other PGA Tour start was in the 2015 CIMB Classic.

Well done, Steve!
