Westwood Sings Caddy’s Praise In Bagging Only A Third Tour Ace & 18th Of His Career

Lee Westwood was singing the praise of his caddy and girlfriend, Helen Storey after the former European No. 1 aced his penultimate hole at Carnoustie on day one of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Westwood was playing the short par-3 eighth hole as his 17th and was considering a 7-iron when encouraged by his caddy to go with a 6-iron.

And then much the delight of the now 46-year old Westwood, his shot hit the green just short of the flag and then took two bounces before disappearning into the cup.

“I had 189 yards, which is — I thought the wind was a bit more down and out of left but all of a sudden it just
dropped,” he said.

“I thought, I’m not going to get a 7-iron back there as I stood over it the first time, so I thought, I’d better hit a 6-iron and came off lovely. Just hit it a bit higher to take a bit of distance off it and it landed perfect on the green, as you see on TV there, and ran out and just caught the right edge.

“Actually, it was Helen who said a 6-iron looks better. It’s close to the yardage. So yeah, it was just a nice swing. Came off bang on line. Hit it on line enough often, occasionally they go in.

“It eliminated the putting on that one (smiling).”

While it is only Westwood’s third on Tour, it was his 18th hole-in-one in golf

“I’ve had two playing with Ronan Keating. I had one last year playing at Wentworth on the 5th and one in Austin playing earlier on this year at the Match-Play. It’s always nice to see them go in. Sometimes on blind holes, but that one, I could see it all the way.

“It was very satisfying. Good way to finish off, as well.”

Westwood eventually signed for a three-under par 69 to be trailing six shots adrift of South African Justin Walters who signed off for a stunning 63 on the Old Course at St. Andrews
