Kaymer Moves Into Top Gear At BMW International Open

Home town hero, Martin Kaymer already looks to be in a class of his own and moving into top gear by opening up a two shot lead ahead of the weekend rounds of the BMW International Open.

It has come as no surprise with record crowds out in force to support the two time Major Champion around Golfclub München Eichenried as Kaymer added a second round 66 to move to 11-under par.

Kaymer won the event for a first time in 2008 and while he’s won a PGA Championship and a U.S. Open the very affable German has not tasted success since his stunning eight-shot 2014 U.S. Open success at Pinehurst No. 2.

But now that he’s back home the German fans have responded and help carry Kaymer to his two shot leading cushion,

“The support inspires, it’s different,” he said. “Sometimes you feel embarrassed. It’s a lot to handle at certain times because I’m not that kind of guy that likes to be in the spotlight – but it’s a positive thing and I need to see it as something positive.

“It’s going to be exciting for sure. It’s never easy leading a golf tournament but fortunately I’ve done it a few times in my career.

“It’s a very nice position to be in. Now I just play against myself, try to reach my number and hopefully it’s enough to be in the lead on Saturday evening.

“I didn’t play as well as yesterday, especially on the first nine, I wasn’t comfortable in the way I was hitting the ball. I missed a lot of shots right but I was scrambling well. I felt something nice in my swing and from the 11th I played really well.”

Kaymer had been one-over par through just three holes but soon moved into the BMW overtaking lane posting seven birdies in his next 15 holes, including three in succession from the 11th hole.

South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout carded the lowest round of the week with a 65 to emerge as the nearest challenger, one shot clear of Finnish playing partner Kim Koivu and Swede Sebastian Soderberg.

Defending champion Matt Wallace was then part of a group of seven players four shots back
