Rory McIlroy’s US Open plans are now in real disarray after advising officials he is also withdrawing from next weeks Memorial event in Columbus, Ohio.
The World No. 2 had withdrawn from this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth but was expected to be fit enough for the event next week hosted by Jack Nicklaus.
McIlroy revealed during last fortnight’s Players Championship he was experiencing discomfort in the region under his left shoulder and in a similar area of his ribs the injury he first complained during January’s BMW South African Open, and where he endured the pain despite fighting his way into a play off.
He then returned home to Northern Ireland the day after the Players and following an MRI was advised to “take a conservative approach” to his recovery.
That meant missing out on Wentworth and now McIlroy will sit out the Memorial
Of course, it has now led to speculation if McIlory, and if he is fit enough, will he enter the FedEx St. Jude Classic and in Memphis the week before the US Open that takes place at Erin Hills in Wisconsin from 15-18 June.
