Augusta, GA …
Rory McIlroy continues to shock when expressing his feelings and now revealing he’s a “complete p****” in the lead-up to the Masters.
A few weeks back McIlroy spoke his mind in firing off a salvo to the 20% of Muirfield male members who voted against allowing women members into the Edinburgh club.
And before that McIlroy sounded off to those who criticised him in accepting an invitation to play golf with US President Donald Trump.
But now in an interview with Brian Wacher of US Golf Digest magazine down the 16th fairway in the Pro-Am at the recent Arnold Palmer Invitational, McIlroy has again pulled no punches where asked what immediately comes to mind when the word “Masters” is mentioned.
“Stressful,” he said.
“You ask anyone who knows me, I am a complete prick in the week leading up to Augusta. But they understand and know that. It’s a stressful situation.”
This week is McIlroy’s ‘Take 3’ in striving to win the coveted Grand Slam and join five others to have won all four Grand Slam major championships.
McIlroy went the closest in 2011 sharing the lead on day one, then leading the lead on his own on day two and heading into the final round.
However, a final round 80 put paid to a first Major victory.
But since capturing a US Open, an Open Championship and two PGA Championships McIlroy has been fourth in 2015 and 10th a year ago.
And McIlroy has revealed a big switch in equipment just days after Nike attire announced signing the Ulsterman to a new multi million dollar deal.
McIlroy has stuck new TaylorMade fairway woods in his bag alongside the Callaway “Epic” driver and irons.
McIlroy, and like so many Nike backed stars including Tiger Woods, has been without Nike clubs since the start of the New Year when the sporting giant abandoned their golf equipment business.
