McIlroy Admits He’s Not Favourite For Top BBC Award.

Rory McIlroy admits his chance of being presented with the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year award looks slim.

McIlroy joins British Open winner, Darren Clarke and PGA Tour No. 1 Luke Donald among three golfers nominated for the award.

A total of 10 British sports people have been nominated this year including tennis star, Andy Murray and leading England cricketers Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss.

Rory McIlroy not confident of capturing the 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

However McIlroy is backing 2011 World Champion and Tour de France winning road cyclist, Mark Cavendish to capture the prestigious award.

“There are three golfers nominated this year so that is going to split the vote but if I was making the award I’d go for Mark Cavendish,” said McIlroy.

“He’s one of his best seasons ever in capturing the green jersey in the Tour de France and winning the World Championship, as well, and all in a short space of time.

“His efforts this year are pretty impressive.

“I have met him yet in my travels but I am sure I will get to meet him the night of the awards.”

The 2011 BBC Sportsperson of the Year award will take place at Salford Quays in Manchester on Thursday 22nd December, 2011.
