Casey Singles Out McIlroy For Praise & Takes Plenty Of Positives From Deutsche Bank Second.

What are your feelings right now?

PAUL CASEY:  Well, that was tough, wasn’t it?  Obviously frustrated.  Rory has played ‑‑ what did Rory shoot?

  1. 65.

PAUL CASEY:  Wow, yeah, very impressive.  Yeah, that’s a mighty round of golf.  You know, I struggled a little bit from the get‑go and it’s hard to regain rhythm and make your birdies if you hadn’t started out that way, so I found it incredibly difficult.  I battled well, did a lot of things brilliantly all week, but obviously frustrated, just fell short at the last.

  1. You talked earlier in the week about winning and making it to East Lake. Do you get any satisfaction at all, I notice you’re still (inaudible) ‑‑

PAUL CASEY:  You know me too well.  Not right now standing here, but, you know, I’ve played some great golf and I really feel like I’m trending in a really strong positive way.  You know, the win is not too far away.  Whether it’s the end of this year or whether it’s next year, but I feel good about the game.

  1. You seemed very calm coming into the round. You said you had a game plan with your caddie.  How close did it come to the game plan or was it just so tough it just kind of got sideways and you abandoned it?

PAUL CASEY:  No, no, we stuck to the plan all the way through and it’s just we tried to hit the spots, I missed a couple of shots, that was the frustrating thing.  There was a shot on ‑‑ first of all, the shot I hit at 2, the third shot I thought was perfect and, you know, maybe got it five feet the wrong side of a ridge and off she went.  And then 5 was another example, I just mishit a 6‑iron in there and I haven’t made those mistakes all week, but this wind was, how should we say, it was so testing that it just found those little errors and it found me out a couple times today.  But the game plan was good.  It’s just really confusing when I’ve been hitting things like 9‑irons and soft wedges into holes like 15 and all the sudden you’ve got a hit a 6‑iron off a pretty good drive.  It’s just a little bit strange.

  1. You eagled 18 yesterday. You had even shorter distance today.  What was ‑‑

PAUL CASEY:  Right between clubs.

  1. You were?

PAUL CASEY:  Yeah.  I’ve got a fairly hot 3‑iron which is what I used yesterday and I was a good 25 yards past yesterday.  4‑iron just wasn’t making it, and I had to get it over the hazard.  I had to have an opportunity to make eagle and with a hard left to right wind trying to hit a soft 3‑iron it’s just not really ‑‑ it’s not in many guys’ repertoire, but, yeah, I couldn’t justify hitting the 4‑iron and dumping it short.  That just would have; been ‑‑ it wouldn’t have been excusable.

  1. How much of a factor was the wind?

PAUL CASEY:  Massive.  Yeah, which makes Rory’s round so good.  I think that’s, you know, I played some good stuff today.  I wasn’t missing with birdies.  But I felt like I stayed pretty tough.  His round of golf, you know, should really be applauded.  That’s stellar stuff.

  1. Despite trending in the right direction, is this one going to sting a while for you?

PAUL CASEY:  No.  A bottle of wine tonight, I’ll be all right.

  1. Couple bottles maybe?

PAUL CASEY:  Maybe.  They always sting, but I’m happy with the way things are panning out and the work Johnny and I have done, yeah, they always sting but there’s always next week or this week.

  1. A three‑shot lead beginning this final round and, Paul, when we talked prior to the start of things you knew it was always going to be a challenge, big names behind you. How did this one play out?

PAUL CASEY:  Well, obviously hasn’t played out the way I wanted it to play out.  I found it incredibly difficult.  I, you know, missed a couple shots early on and got a little bit out of rhythm.  The wind had a lot to do with that and never felt like I really regained rhythm.  When you’re backing off that many times it’s difficult.  But I stayed tough, I gave myself an opportunity of coming down the last couple.  I think the big thing in this is you have to look at what Rory just shot.  It’s an absolutely amazing round of golf in those conditions and shows how good he is.

  1. With the confidence so high through three days can you pinpoint a moment in that round where you felt like it just wasn’t going to be the same in the final round?

PAUL CASEY:  Well, I think we all knew from the beginning before we teed off it was going to be different.  I think what was frustrating was I didn’t hit a bad shot into the second hole, what I thought was a bad shot into the second hole, and it was about five feet from where I wanted it.  If it stayed where I wanted it, it would have rolled back towards the flag and suddenly she rolls right off the side of the green right next to the hazard.  I dropped one there.  I missed a 6‑iron on 5 and then left the par putt short.  Those weren’t mistakes I was making on the first three days.  And this wind was just, it was highlighting any weakness you had, not that it was a weakness, but, you know, the rhythm got slightly out and I missed a couple of shots.  Very, very difficult to get those birdies back once you drop the shots.

  1. Not the ultimate outcome you had hoped for, but what do you take from this week overall?

PAUL CASEY:  A lot of positives.  You know, I feel like the game is right where I want it.  I feel like I can grab a victory maybe before the season is out.  And we’re already on Monday so there’s always this week
