Masters champion Danny Willett has taken wife, Nicole and new son, Zachariah back to the golf course where it all began – Lindrick Golf Club, near Worksop in Notthinghamshire.
And father, mother and son thoroughly enjoyed the occasion as did many dozens of supporters who turned up to congratulate golf’s new Masters winner.
“No individual has ever been able to achieve anything on their own,” said Willett.
“It is always a team effort and it depends who is on that team and fortunately I have a fantastic wife and we have a beautiful little boy.“I am massively thankful for everything Nicole has done for me and now the little man has come along I am going to have to give it back by doing a lot of night shifts and night feeds.”
The Yorkshireman has four weeks until his next tournament. Of his plans until then, he said: “Put my feet up and just drink tea and relax and have some family time and think about what we’ve done.”
He now has a lifetime invitation to the Masters, and he hosts the Champion’s Dinner next year, with his choice of menu.
“We’ve got a few months to think about that but there will be a little bit of Yorkshire in there,” he said.
And Sheffield’s Mayor Talib Hussain said it will hold a civic reception for Willett and intends to award him a star on the “Legends” walk outside the City Hall alongside other names from the steel city, including 2012 Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill.
“We are incredibly proud of Danny, especially considering he started playing on one of our council golf courses,” said the Mayor.
