Matthew Fitzpatrick Insists Dad Is Still His Biggest Critic.

His father may be be his biggest critic but young Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick admits he is ahead of career expectations in teeing up at this week’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

He won a first European Tour title late last season in capturing the British Masters and just three weeks ago he made his pro-team career debut in being a member of the victorious European EurAsia Cup team in Kuala Lumpur.

In a few months time the current World No. 44 will make his second appearance at Augusta National after stepping out onto the Georgia golfing gem two years ago as the reigning US Amateur champion.

The 21-year old Sheffield-born Fitzpatrick is very much a quite achiever but when asked who was his hardest critic it was a very forthright in his reply.

“My dad who is sitting in the his room (Media Centre Interview Room),” he said smiling broadly.

Earlier in his interview Fitzpatrick admitted he is constantly re-evaluating his goals after an impressive 2015, but that breaking into top 50 in the rankings remains an important one.

After winning at Woburn, recorded a further top ten finishes in five tournaments.
“I think for me personally, they change all the time with the position that I’m in,” he said.  “Obviously I’m hovering around the top 50 right now, so it’s maintaining and obviously to try and get higher than that.

“Everyone is trying to win every tournament they play. That’s my goal, and this year just happens to be a Ryder Cup year as well, so that’s another thing I’ll be looking for. It’s not something I try to get too caught up with.”

As a member of the European EURASIA CUP, Fitzpatrick has already experienced a team environment and said that the experience has made him look at the way he approaches each event.
“Everyone was sort of having a good laugh and enjoying themselves. I think that was the big thing that Darren [Clarke] tried to promote, as well, is that you just want to go out there and enjoy yourself and normally when that happens you play your best golf. I think that’s the sort of mentality that I’m trying to take personally into each week.
