Shane Lowry confessed he’s heading to the biggest round in his short professional career at the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
Lowry, a two-time winner on the European Tour, is just two shots behind the leading pair of England’s Justin Rose and American Jim Furyk in the US 9.25m event being staged on the Firestone Country Club course.
The Bank of Ireland backed Lowry is staring at a first prize cheque of US 1.5m along with a five-year exemption on both the European and PGA Tour’s.
Little wonder the quietly-spoken Irishman, and ranked 48th in the world, is trying to play down what lays ahead.
“I played nicely today and while it would have been nice to see that birdie drop at the last, I am right where I want to be going into the final round,” he said.
“I am out in the second last group and just two behind the leaders so I am looking forward to the last day.
“Overall I am pretty happy and looking forward in this big event of going out there and doing something special.”
Lowry is already assured of 2015/16 PGA Tour membership however a victory or top three finish would secure him a play in the lucrative FedEx Cup Play-Off Series later this year.
“My game has been good for a couple of years now and I feel like I am driving the ball well, and if I can get a few more putts to drop then there could be something special this time tomorrow,” he said.
“The thing is I have not been the final group on a Saturday for as long as I can remember but then to be playing alongside Jim Furyk today was something special.
“I surprised myself how much I was in control of my emotions and I was out there feeling very relaxed aside one of the best players in the world and there is nothing like that, so I enjoyed every minute.”
And if he should be handed the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational troph.
“I can’t even begin to explain to you what it would be like but then I know tomorrow will probably be one of the biggest days of my career,” he said.
“I know if I can go out there and do something special tomorrow it could kick start a very great future.”
