Peter Frampton Comes Alive – 37 Years After Rocking Sydney To 2015 In Cleveland.

I felt right at home among the audience last night in the auditorium of the Hard Rock Cafe ‘Live’ Highfield Park Casino just on the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio.

The room was packed full of 50 & 60 year old’s and everyone warming to a thrilling two-hour concert by legendary rocker Peter Frampton.

The England-born singer is now 65 years and living in Nashville but age was not a factor in an exciting peformance and with Frampton playing all his most famous hits and songs from the 4th largest selling live LP ever – Frampton Comes Alive.

I was reminded by my brother Steve it was 1978 when we first saw Frampton in Sydney and on his first visit ‘Down Under’ and just two years after the release in what was then the largest selling live concert LP.

Fortunately, being in closeby Akron, Ohio this week reporting on the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational enabled me to take the short 30 minutes drive last night to catch Frampton ‘live’.

For a long time I have carried, and still continue to carry, a CD of Frampton Comes Alive in my vehicle back in Scotland where I am based but to again see Frampton live after so long was just ‘pinching yourself’ stuff.

Last night Frampton commenced playing Somthing’s Happening but it one of his closing songs Do You Feel Like We Do that got really brought the crowd to their feet lasting for nearly 15 minutes and with Frampton’s now infamous ‘talkbox’ key the the song.

He ended playing a fantastic version of another of my favourite songs, the George Harrinson While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

Frampton was great with the audience inter-acting after every song and also remarking at the start of the concert he was playing in Cleveland as part of his quest to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame something that still has alluded him, and despite his being inducted last year into the Musican’s Hall of Fame in Nashville and also earning a Grammy award.

However it was a fabulous night and one I will long remember given memories of seeing the then long-haired rock star in Sydney in 1978 have long faded.

I was fortunate afterwards, and putting into effect my golf writing investigative skills, in getting to shake hands with Frampton and remarking:  “I first saw you at a concert in Sydney in 1978”.

He responded: “Now you are making both of us feel old.”

Thanks Peter for a great concert and the chance to relive those days in Sydney an incredible 37 years ago.
