Damie McGrane Shakes Off Injury Concern As Peter Lawrie Identifies Downturn.

Damien McGrane has shaken off a wrist injury concern to take his place in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in Doha.

McGrane injured tendons in his left wrist while pulling a golf cart on his beloved Headfort Golf Club at Kells in Co. Meath ahead of teeing up in last week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship where he managed to play all four rounds and finish T55th.

“If it wasn’t for the anti-inflamatories I was taking last week, I would not have played in Abu Dhabi,” he said.

“My wrist was swollen up like a golf ball on Saturday night but fortunately the swelling subsided and even now you can see a bit of swelling around the tendons.

“I’ve been to see the doctors here this week so I should be fine for this week.”

Joining McGrane is his long-time good friend, Peter Lawrie and along with Belfast’s Michael Hoey, they are the only Irish competing for the Euro 350,000 first prize cheque.

Lawrie is contesting this week’s event as well as the next two thanks to invitations and looking to break a run of missing the cut in his opening two events last month in South Africa on the wraparound 2014/15 schedule.

And hopefully helping the now PGA Catalunya attached pro is a decision to go back to using the Titleist ball.

“I sat down and went back through all my stats and really the down turn in my game began in 2013 when I started using the TaylorMade (one word and cap M) ball,” he admitted.

“So I’ve been so much happier going back to the Titleist ball and it’s given me a big lift in confidence, so after the Christmas and New Year break I’m itching to get back into competition.

“And it’s going to suit me fine given the forecast is going to be for continuing strong winds here in Doha.”

However spectator interest in the 126-player field will focus on defending champion, Sergio Garcia and his Gleneagles victorious team-mates in Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Stephen Gallacher.
