Norman Surprised USA Ryder Cup Task Force … “It’s Not Rocket Science Why Europe Wins.”

Double Major winning Greg Norman is the latest big name in golf to express surprise the PGA of America has set-up a task force to appoint a USA Captain to replace Tom Watson.

Norman, who was also a losing International captain in two President Cup encounters, has declared ‘it’s not rocket science’ why Europe have captured eight of the past 10 Ryder Cup matches,

The PGA of America announced the setting up of an 11-man task force soon after Phil Mickelson’s controversial comments immediately following Europe’s five-point triumph at Gleneagles.

Norman was asked his views ahead of the 26th edition of the Frankin Templeton Shootout he is again hosting at the Triburon Golf Club course here in Naples, Florida.

And the 59-year old former long-time World No. 1 has joined the chorus of disbelief the USA has needed to go down the path of a task force.

“I was actually surprised the PGA of America announced the setting up of a task force,” said Norman.

“It’s not rocket science.  Just go have fun and play, and do what those on the European Team do and that’s to have fun and they play.

“At the end of the day if you just take a page our of the European Tour’s book and how they approach it.  I think we are all very observant to this.  The captain’s hand down the secret to the captain before.  The captains want to know what went right and what went wrong from the previous captaincy.   There’s no egos, there’s no jealousy or anything.

“The European Team really gelled all the way through.  And they start talking about the Ryder Cup as a team from the day after the one that was completed at Gleneagles.

“So they instill this spirit for two years and that spirit just comes out for that four or five days, and you can see the difference.  You watch it on TV, and I watched every stroke of the Ryder Cup. You could see also the difference in expressions on the players’ faces and that’s what missing on the US Team.

“The American players aren’t lesser players physically than the European players.  The European players aren’t a better player than the Americans because led by a Rory McIlroy.

“They’ve all got that, but they need to focus on that team spirit and getting everybody working together at an earlier stage.  That’s when I think the American team will really start gelling together.”

And Norman was asked if he was not surprised how European Team captain Paul McGinley went about leading the European Team to victory.

“Not, I was not surprised at all,” said Norman.

“I know Paul fairly well and he’s a guy who would have really wanted the players to feel like no matter what was asked of them to do, he had all the bases covered.

“Paul allowed them to just be able to work together as a team, talk together as a team, practice as a team, and then go execute as a team.  So Paul just did everything so beautifully behind the scene with no pressure either.

“And knowing Paul that’s exactly how he approached if for the two years.”
