Graeme McDowell could see the humorous side of his Irish Open disappointment posting a picture on Facebook sitting atop an Irish Police motorbike at nearby Cork Airport.
The caption reads: “Robbed on the greens this weekend. Police investigation has begun!! “
And McDowell has good cause for an investigation given he averaged 27 putts over the first two rounds but then had 31 putts on each of the two days of the weekend to not only spoil hopes of a first Irish Open win but dash Irish spectator hopes of a home victory at Fota Island.
“It is perhaps one of the worst putting efforts on a weekend in my career as regards being in contention,” he said.
“I let it slip away on Saturday and just continued in the same vein today. It’s very disappointing but what a fantastic weekend, great Irish Open, great fans but disappointed I could have done a little better for them.
“But then this result represents my best Irish Open finish ever, so that’s a positive. It was there for the taking this week, no doubt about that.”
