Lee Westwood’s oozing with confidence so much so he reckons he can be knocking on the door for victory with a round to play in the Players Championship in Florida.
Westwood ran the Union Jack up into a share of fifth late on day two of the PGA Tour’s flagship event with a score of 71 in tough conditions to move to six under par.
It left the recent Malaysian Open winner six shots behind fellow former World No. 1 Martin Kaymer, and with the German adding a 69 to his opening 63.
However the biggest threat was coming from American sensation Jordan Spieth who moved to within a shot of Kaymer’s lead at 11-under par, and in the 20-year’s first appearance on TPC Sawgrass.
Westwood had four birdies and half as many bogeys in his round and with the highlight being holing a 20-footer for birdie at the infamous island green 17th he was playing as his eighth hole.
“I played well again and really not to dissimilar to Thursday, and on this golf course there is fine margins,” he said.
“But then looking at Martin’s score it’s obvious he’s done a lot of his damage on the back nine on day one however we saw today that it’s difficult to come out the next day and match that 63.
“I’m now only six behind with two rounds to go and I would fancy myself being six behind with just nine holes to play on Sunday in this tournament, but then with two rounds to play that’s even better.”
