Double Masters champion Bubba Watson has spent the past month donating money to his former primary schools but admitting all the pupils were worried about was 450 free pizzas.
Watson purposely side-stepped the post Masters series of late night TV show host appearances in New York and instead headed south to Florida to first visit his mother and then return to primary schools in Bagdad, Florida and Pensacola also in Florida along with Georgia State College in Athens.
Watson grew up in the north-west Florida town of Bagdad, which has a population of approximately 1,600. He played golf at Milton High School before he attended Faulkner State College, and later the University of Georgia.
The American donated $US 35,000 to each school for computers and new technology, and also threw the opening pitch in the Pensacola -v- ahoo Game at Bayfront Stadium and while wearing his green jacket.
He arrived wearing his second Augusta National green jacket and spoke to the kids about the importance on the family unit.
“I thought rather than going up to New York what I did last time, this time was all about inspiring kids and giving back,” he said.
“I did that for roughly two weeks and the first thing I said to the school kids, and with their parents there with them, to listen to their teachers because they are there to help them.
“But then the kids couldn’t care less about me giving them a cheque, so I did a photo shoot for all the kids, for every single one of them, and then I bought pizza for the kids.
“The high school couldn’t care less who Bubba Watson is. They liked the free pizza. Yeah, that was perfect. We like the guy..
“But then when I went to Georgia State College in Athens and to an awards banquet for the smart kids, but I was never invited to this banquet.
“So my joke when I got there was that it took me two green jackets before I could get myself invited to this event and not because of my school grades.
“I also threw a first pitch at one of the schools and I think that must the first time someone has thrown first pitch wearing an Augusta green jacket.
“So that was cool, and I’ve got that going for me.”
And Watson’s revealed that his second green jacket, and much like his first, will now stay in the family wardrobe and it will not be seen again in public until next April when he returns to defend his Masters title.
Watson will tee-up in this week’s $US 10m Championship among four players who could go to World No. 1 in the absence again of defending TPC Sawgrass champion, Tiger Woods.
However Watson confessed that becoming World No. 1 is not a priority in his life.
“If I get to No. 1 I will retire (smiling),” he said.
“But it would be the same as winning the green jacket, as the green jacket to me is the pinnacle of the game but then we’ve seen guys who have been No. 1 for just one week but then there is guys like Phil Mickelson who has never been No. 1 and he’s arguably the top-five best of all time and he’s never been No. 1
“So that would just show me the rankings are messed up with Bubba Watson being No. 1 and Phil Mickelson has never been.
“So it would be great for my family and my mom, but it’s not going to ruin my life or my career if I don’t get to No. 1.”
