The Quail Hollow Golf Club in suburban Charlotte will always be special to Rory McIlroy.
It was here in 2010 he shot a final round 62 to win his first PGA Tour event, the then Quail Hollow Championship.
Two years ago in the renamed Wells Fargo Championship McIlroy lost in a play-off to American Rickie Fowler while last year he was also in contention until a two-over par back nine on Sunday.
However when asked if he were to chose any spot on the course where he would place a plaque for any of the 951 shots he’s played in his 14 rounds, the double Major winner chose two places including the spot on 15 where he hit a 5-iron to 3 1/2 feet on the final day in 2010, and just a few days shy of his 21st birthday.
“I would place a plaque with at the spot where I hit the 5-iron I hit on 15 on the last day that year I won in 2010,” he said.
“Also I was going to the cut that year. I was missing the cut with three holes to play and then I eagled 7 and parred the 8th and 9th, so I played the last three holes just under par to make the cut on the number.
“I hit a bit 4-iron on the 7th from 220 yards out and that was a big shot because I needed to do that just to make the cut to give myself a chance over the weekend.
“So, one of the plaques on the 7th and one of the 15th.”
And as a reminder of McIloy’s stunning victory in 2010 here is a video highlights package.
