Sandy Lyle seems to be finally resigned to having no part in this year’s European Ryder Cup despite living less than an hour from the Gleneagles host course.
Before taking the some two-hour drive west on I-20 to the PGA Champions event in the Atlanta suburb of Duluth, Lyle was asked if he had bumped into European Ryder Cup captain, Paul McGinley.
McGinley has been in Augusta all week working with Sky Sports, and whether he felt McGinley may find a role for the double Major winner in his back-room team
“I doubt if I will be there in an official capacity,” said Lyle after a closing round 73 for a share of 40th place.
“I’m out of touch a lot of times with the European golf and what McGinley does on that, on sort of a weekly basis. He’s made no effort to say, if you’re thinking you’re a possible, just don’t worry about it. I got my other ideas, and that’s fine, but he hasn’t done that.
“So, I don’t blame him, but it’s up to him, if he wants some help, then I’ll be there.
“But as for being at the Ryder Cup myself, I think I’ll still be in the corporate side of it.
“I will play a few rounds of golf somewhere else and entertaining somebody and maybe passing on the life experiences of Ryder Cups.
There’s always something but then it would be a shame to let it slide past you especially when I only live about 40 miles away”.
